Meet Ted Hoehn
Ted Hoehn has been a recognizable name in New England tennis circles for more than five decades. The son of Red Hoehn, Dartmouth’s Tennis & Squash Coach for 25 years from 1938-1963, Ted grew up in Hanover, N.H., in the days when there were no indoor tennis courts. A talented all-around athlete, Ted played multiple sports during the academic year, and then focused on tennis during the summer months. By the time Ted had turned fifteen, he had already twice been ranked #1 in boys singles, and had won a record five New England 15 & under Doubles Championships.
At Hanover High School, Ted captained the football, ice hockey, and baseball teams in his senior year. He earned All-State honors in football and hockey. And despite the fact that Hanover High did not have a formal tennis team, Ted won the New Hampshire High School Singles Title four consecutive years.
At the University of North Carolina, Ted played #2 singles and #1 doubles on the perennially powerful Tar Heel team. He and his partner won two Atlantic Coast Conference and two Eastern Intercollegiate Doubles Championships. Ted was voted to the All-ACC team three times, and served as co-captain his final two years.
After a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, where Ted was based at West Point and served as the Plebe Tennis and Squash Coach, Hoehn travelled to Europe to test his skills on the red clay. His best result was reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious Monte Carlo Open in doubles with his legendary partner, Gardner Mulloy. They lost to the Czech Davis Cup team of Holecek-Kukal after having a match point in the fifth set.
Over the years Ted has accumulated many honors as a senior player. He has won five United States Senior Doubles Championships. In 1996 Ted and his partner, Dick Johnson, won the ITF World 50 & over Doubles Championship in Austria.
Besides having a strong playing record, Ted has been known for years as being a knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher. He has worked with many regional, national, and international players. In addition to coaching at West Point, Ted has taught at the American Yacht Club in Rye, N.Y.; the Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, N.Y.; and the Badminton & Tennis Club in Boston. He has been running Adult Camps at Windridge since the early 70’s, and Ted has several couples who have attended more than twenty sessions!
Come join Ted and his wife, Nanny, who is also an accomplished athlete, for three days of fun-filled tennis instruction, excellent food and lodging, along with other first-class amenities …in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont.
Each session will run for three days. Guests are expected to arrive at noon on the first day. Departure on the third day will be around 1:30, after a morning of tennis and lunch. The program consists of five hours of daily tennis instruction; 2 1/2 hours in the morning (9:30 - 12:00) and 2 1/2 hours in the afternoon (2:30 - 5:00). Each session is limited to twelve guests. Besides emphasizing fundamentals, lots of time will be focused on both singles and doubles strategy, court positioning, mental toughness, and playing "within your limits". Players are grouped according to their ability and experience. Our goal is to have everyone walk away a much improved player, as well as to have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. For those spouses who are not avid tennis players, there are plenty of other option… from golf at the nearby Northfield Country Club, to antiquing, horseback riding, fly fishing, and even cooking classes.
If any group of five couples would like to come at a different time than the scheduled dates, or you would prefer a shorter or longer session length, please contact Ted Hoehn at 802-238-8379 or e-mail email@example.com.
